My great-great aunt was born out of wedlock well b My great-great aunt was born out of wedlock well before her mother (my 2x great grandmother) married my 2x great grandfather. She was the only living child who remained in England - her parents and half-siblings left to Canada. She lived in Manchester (pictured) 🇨🇦Read more on the blog today! A year ago today I would have been right here, at A year ago today I would have been right here, at @mcnally_house, honored to be witness to my Nan’s final few days at her side. This year on the day before the anniversary of her death, we’ll be doing the #hikeforhospice2020 to raise funds for this amazing place. Their staff were and are among the kindest humans I’ve ever had the honor to meet. And although I’d rather see them because I’m fundraising than any other reason, I would trust them to treat any of my family members like their own. If you’re moved or have had a similar experience, I’d urge you to sponsor us for our hike - https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/mcnally-house-hospice/p2p/HikeForHospice2020/team/the-walking-knappers/

Most of my likes can be traced back to the UK. I h Most of my likes can be traced back to the UK. I have family traced to 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Scotland, 🇮🇪 Ireland, 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Wales and 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England. But this week, as I trace my maternal grandfather’s mother’s family - I find a new link - a French family. Farmers. So when they came to 🇨🇦 Canada, and settled in #ArthurON they couldn’t read or write...and their name was anglicized. What may have been Gareau became Garrow. But we’ll see where it takes me. The top photo was taken as my great-grandfather ma The top photo was taken as my great-grandfather marched with over 8,000 troops on March 18, 1916 in #HamOnt. Having enlisted in September and quickly marrying my great-grandmother, she became pregnant with my Gran just before shipping overseas. Gran was born in February 1917 and did not meet or know her father until he returned. I think of my grandfather and his sacrifice today and also of the sacrifice of those he left behind...worrying about whether he would return when so many of his comrades did not. (More: #linkinbio https://sillymummyfamilytree.ca/75th-battalion-canadian-expeditionary/). The second photo of the same location at the corner of Barton and St. Matthews shows how much has changed...and yet how much has remained the same. .

A photo in my collection led me to discover that a A photo in my collection led me to discover that a Grand Military parade was held in #hamont on March 18, 1916. My great-grandfather, Arthur Bird Griffin has enlisted the previous September and a postcard in my collection features his unit marching in the parade. An article in @hamiltonspectator suggests the parade was 3 miles long and took one full hour to pass at any point. With a little luck and some helped from Janet at the @hamiltonlibrary - I was able to also determine the location the photo I have was taken. Tea was huge for my Gran. She taught me that you n Tea was huge for my Gran. She taught me that you need the water to come to a rolling boil before pouring it over the tea. Always put the bag in first. And never, ever squeeze it when removing. Although I didn’t truly gain an appreciation for the beverage until after my son was born, I have since had #hightea in numerous places, and have attended seminars given by tea sommeliers. I know good tea. And @ladymagpiestea at the @tuckertonseaprt is among the finest places I’ve had it. Get out and get Lady Magpie’s blend if you have the chance. In addition to the fine tea ☕️, amazing treats 🧁, you’re surrounded by an authentic steampunk inspired decor. And these ladies make damn fine company. Shoutout to @joeyfortman and @realitymoms for making it happen. .
