George Edward Webb

When George Edward Webb was born on October 31, 1915, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, his father, William Alfred Webb (1883-1951), was 32 and his mother, Louie (née Shepherd) (1882-1962) was 33. His parents had emigrated with his older brother William Alfred Jr. (1909-1962) from England to Canada in 1910.

George married Dorothy Irene Griffin on November 30, 1940 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Dorothy Irene Griffin

Dorothy Irene Griffin was born on February 11, 1917, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, her father, Arthur Bird Griffin (1888-1972), was 28, and her mother, Lily (née Moore) (1891-1985), was 25. Dorothy was the eldest of three girls. Her father spent her early years fighting in WWI and was away at the time of her birth.

The couple had two children and settled first at 15 Wexford Avenue North and then at 57 Houghton Avenue North, Hamilton.

George died on April 24, 1957, in his hometown at the age of 41 of complications arising from appendicitis. His obituary reads:

“WEBB – At the General Hospital on Wednesday, April 24, 1957, George Edward Webb, beloved husband of Dorothy Griffin, 57 Houghton Avenue North, in his 43rd year. Resting at L.G. Wallace Funeral Home, 191 Ottawa Street N. Funeral service on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Interment in Woodland Cemetery.”

George is buried in the Woodland Cemetery in Hamilton, Ontario (Monument #409 – “Webb, George E. 1914 – 1957” Section 20N, Part 1). The information on the plot reads “Section 20, Lot 353 (east-centre grave) – Dorothy WEBB of 57 Houghton Avenue South, Hamilton purchased this 30-square-foot, single grave in April 1957. There is one burial in this grave.”

After George’s death, Dorothy worked at Minden’s Jewellers (later People’s) at the Centre Mall in Hamilton, Ontario. She continued living in the home at 57 Houghton Avenue North until 2004 when she became ill and moved into Macassa Lodge in Hamilton.

There are now two burials at the site in Woodland Cemetery – Dorothy died on January 12, 2010, in Hamilton at the age of 92 and rests with her husband.
